News and commentary from Thailand and Southeast Asia. Bird flu, violence in Southern Thailand and continued corruption are current themes in this part of the world. You can also find out about my latest research and publications. Welcome to the Land of Smiles.
I was just blog-surfing and thought I'd see what your journal is about. You have great content, and I like your layout. Your text is a bit small, but otherwise, your blog looks great.
Good afternoon,
A man killed eight people and injured more than one hundred by throwing a hand grenade into a celebrating crowd at a temple fair. Apparently the man involved had been upset by some youths upsetting his uncle and thought it appropriate to buy a hand grenade in Loei province for 500 baht (that’s about US$15) and then blow up a crowd. I have written before about the problems in Thai society resulting from the prevalence of weapons – it is usually guns that cause the problems but there are worse things available too, it seems. Remember, people kill people when they have guns (perhaps also a pointed stick).
The integrity-challenged one is supporting the PAD ringleader Kasit Priyoma whom he shamefully appointed Foreign Minister (assuming that he did have a role in the decision and it was not all the desire of an invisible hand and its invisible master). Up to 40,000 red-shirted pro-democracy supporters demonstrated outside government over the weekend, perfectly peaceful and presented their principal demands: fire the foreign minister because of his repeated and unrecanted support for the airport seizure, dissolve the parliament and end the rule of this illegitimate government (which the Quisling was all in favour of before) and speed up the prosecution of the main PAD ringleaders.
Two words: gold futures. Well, as shares and other investments appear less attractive at the moment, new instruments in gold and gold futures are expected to show growth in the future. Basically, a ‘future’ is a piece of paper that you buy at a price now which reflects what you think the price of the commodity will be at some stage in the future. Investors will try to spot differences between the price on the piece of paper and their own opinion – like all futures, it is essentially gambling dressed up in a pin-striped shirt.
Back tomorrow.
0-0 is acceptable. However, that’s one goal in three games – time to cancel the open-top bus again.
