Airport Runway Cracks Reporter Reinstated

Good afternoon,

The Bangkok Post has been ordered to reinstate the reporter Sermsuk Kasitpradit who was sacked a couple of years ago for his story about cracks in the runway in the new airport at Suvarnabhumi (http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/25Jul2007_news03.php). Mr Sermsuk will not get all of the compensation he requested, though. This decision helps demonstrate that, at least to some extent, Thailand does have checks and balances to ensure some freedom of speech under the law – which is one of the things for which the previous administration was criticized by some.

The junta-appointed ‘cabinet’ has agreed to some measures to deal with the high rate of the baht (http://etna.mcot.net/query.php?nid=30677). This includes permitting individuals and companies to open overseas currency accounts in Thailand (notably in dollars) and being permitted to transfer capital overseas to invest in property.

Tonight’s the big night for the semi-finals in the 2007 Asian Cup.
