Just Like Watching Brazil or Another Latin American Country

Good morning,

Wearing a new(ish) Brazil style kit, the Thai national team beat Qatar 2-0 last night in a performance hailed by the Bangkok Post as ‘just like watching Brazil’ (http://www.bangkokpost.com/Sports/03Jul2007_sport29.php). Having not seen the game, I cannot judge the truth of this but, having seen the team a number of times before, I would be surprised if this were really the case. An earlier match between the two countries was abandoned on Saturday at half time with the score at 1-1 because of heavy rain (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/07/03/sport/sport_30039053.php). People are talking up Thailand’s chances now that the Asian Cup is nearly about to start but I cannot see them getting out of the group that also contains Australia and Iraq. Well, we shall see, of course.

In a further statement of commitment to democracy, junta appointed ‘prime minister’ General Surayud Chulanont has warned that campaigning to reject the proposed new constitution could be illegal (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/07/03/headlines/headlines_30039049.php). The entire cabinet of Thaksin Shinawatra, elected in a democratic landslide and then re-elected twice more, is to be charged for implementing democratically-mandated policies (http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/03Jul2007_news01.php). This latest charge is to do with the two and three number lottery which the military government decided to continue with. Of course, that is a quite different story.

Her Majesty the Queen has travelled to Russia to mark 110 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=119867). It was King Rama V Chulalongkorn who famously visited Russia as part of the overseas journeys which helped him plan his modernization efforts and which are still very famous today.
