APEC to Discuss Climate Change; Two Soldiers Killed in Narathiwat; Pro-Democracy Activists Still Detained

Good afternoon,

The twenty one nations of APEC – the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation organization – are to gather through representatives in Australia this week to discuss the issues of climate change (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=120580). Possessing one third of the world’s population and the two greatest emitters of greenhouse gas, the USA and China, APEC offers an opportunity to hammer out some kind of agreement by which all countries will be prepared to abide. It seems unlikely to spring into action directly, instead some progress might be made without necessarily completing a deal.

Two soldiers have been killed and two others injured in an ambush in Narathiwat (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/read.php?newsid=30043239). A wave of six bomb attacks was set off across the province this morning, leading to a number of injuries but, as yet, no reports of fatalities (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/read.php?newsid=30043240).

Student activists have been demonstrating for the release of 15 members of the White Pigeon movement, who were seized by police after a demonstration outside the house of Privy Councillor General Prem Tinsunalonda, widely suspected as having masterminded last year’s military coup (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/read.php?newsid=30043247). Lawyers have handed in petitions to the court requesting release of eight other pro-democracy demonstrators some ten days after they were seized and detained (http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/breakingnews.php?id=120583).

Back tomorrow.
