Phuket Air Crash

Good evening,

The news is still dominated by the crash of the One Two Go plane at Phuket Airport, which killed 89 people. Bad weather is being blamed (http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/18Sep2007_news01.php), although pilot error is not yet being ruled out. Airline executives are defending the pilots concerned (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=121790). The black boxes have been recovered and are being sent to the USA for analysis, the results of which should be available in about four weeks.

Some stories tell of the quiet heroism of some survivors, both British (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=121767) and Thai (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=121766). Those who survived have, understandably, mixed emotions (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2007/09/18/national/national_30049306.php). Phuket airport is now reported as having reopened (http://etna.mcot.net/query.php?nid=31717).

I’ve just finished a two-day workshop hosted here on Southeast Asian Capital Cities, which was very successful, I think, although it took up a lot of my time. I presented a paper on the topic of Vientiane, along with one of my PhD students. The next step will be to prepare the paper for possible publication.

Back tomorrow at some stage, when I hope to have more time for a proper update.
