Nuon Chea Arrested; Burmese Monks Protest

Good afternoon,

Brother number 2, Nuon Chea, has been arrested (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7002053.stm). He has been flown from his home to Phnom Penh to stand before a UN-backed tribunal. The tribunal has taken a number of years to organise and some of the leading Khmer Rouge members have, so to speak, escaped justice by dying before having to go on the stand. Nuon Chea, who is now 82, is the highest ranking Khmer Rouge leader still about and he had been living in freedom close to the border with Thailand (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=121817).

Monks have started protests across Burma. Thousands of monks have been protesting against the actions of the military junta (http://www.irrawaddy.org/protests/BurmaProtests.php#05). Some gatherings of monks have been broken up by security forces using tear gas. The Irrawaddy is also running an interesting story based on research into the 1988 military coup and the possible role of China (http://www.irrawaddy.org/article.php?art_id=8645).

There has been another spat about the Yued Ok Pok Thung (Proud to Carry Condoms) TV campaign which some people have claimed is encouraging teenagers to have sex (http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/19Sep2007_news04.php). I didn’t think they needed much encouragement but did need protection. Research shows that fewer that half of Thai teenagers used a condom when they had sex for the first time.
