Junta Guns Down Ten - Maybe Dozens More

Good afternoon,

The Burmese military has sealed off five monasteries to reduce the protests planned to go ahead again today (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7017496.stm). Ten people are known to have been killed by authorities during the peaceful demonstrations led by monks and some reports place the numbers of dead in the scores. The confirmed dead include on Japanese video journalist. Condemnation has come from around the world, including President George W. Bush of the USA and the leasers of ASEAN (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7017369.stm).

Around 300 Burmese students and workers have gathered at their embassy here in Bangkok to continue the protests (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=122117), which are underway around the world. Another 400 Burmese have gathered in the border town of Tak to offer up prayers for their compatriots (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/read.php?newsid=30050586). The Burmese people themselves have been able to spread word of what is going on by recording video on mobile telephones and sending it by email or by posting blogs (http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/II29Ae01.html). At the time of writing, protests are said to be continuing (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=122094).

Human rights activists here are pointing out how little the government is doing to put pressure on the Burmese government to cease its policy of violence (http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/28Sep2007_news01.php). They wonder why the Thai military junta does not condemn the Burmese military junta for not listening to the people.

Back on Monday.
